A Personal Account Of Sciatica Pain

Some years ago I had done some preliminary damage to my back that lead to frequent moments of serious sciatica pain in my life. Since then I have replaced the sciatica pain with two herniated discs in my back which is a much more constant and annoying pain but the fact remains that I can give a very detailed first hand account of how sciatica pain comes about and what it is like.

It is never a pleasurable experience and sciatica pain is also not something that has any real warnings or lets you know in any way that it is coming on. Sometimes you can trigger it by over exerting your back but it is not always your back that triggers sciatica pain. It is a very tricky and painful little experience that can sneak up on you out of nowhere and leave you crippled in pain for days. To give you an example of what it is like I will give you an account of my first experience with sciatica pain.

I had injured myself playing sports but I was young enough where I didn\'t pay it any mind. I was in my mid-20\'s and the thought of a life long temporarily crippling injury never really occurred to me. After the injury that was received from a hit during a friendly football game I rested for a couple of days and then set off to work. At the time I had a 45 minute drive to work and the very first day I was driving to work I noticed a pain starting where my left leg met my waist. It was not quite in my back yet and as the drive went on the sciatica pain was increasing. By the time I got to work I could not stand for very long nor could I sit for very long. The pain was intense. I finally got to the doctor who informed me that it was indeed sciatica pain and gave me muscle relaxers and pain pills. The pills helped a little but all that really helped was time. After a week it went away.

For years after that, for what would appear to be no reason whatsoever, my sciatica pain would reappear and make it impossible for me to do anything for days in a row. All I could ever do to deal with it is just wait it out. I remember one time going golfing with some friends and it started after we teed off on hole number 1 and by the 7th hole I couldn\'t walk. No warning signs and I had done nothing to bring it on. Then there were times I was sure that it was going to come on after major physical activity and it never did. It was unpredictable and painful.

When people tell you they get sciatica pain it is nothing to laugh at. It is crippling and it is sudden. There are solutions to it but in the end, aside from dangerous surgery, all my doctor could ever offer me as a solution is to just wait it out and put up with it.
